Please begin this activity NOW by following the step-by-step instructions below:

Step 1: Reading (tap/click to view)

Individual Online Activity (Week 1):

  1. Read through this article,  Find the types of shots that are assigned to your group and make notes on what that kind of shot is.  (You will need those notes to post on your blog, so don’t skip the note-taking.)
  2. For Week 2’s face-to-face class, be prepared to take videos on your smartphone.  In other words, make sure you have enough space and battery power on your phone when you come to class.
Step 2: Collaborating (tap/click to view)

Group Activity (In-class during Week 2):

  1. Get together in your groups, go out with your camera equipment and experiment with the shots that have been assigned to your group. Try to make good examples of those shots that you can share with the class. You should have at least one good example for each type of shot that is assigned to your group.
  2. Take several shots, modifying them slightly and seeing how the modification changes the image…. slight changes to light, to angle, elements will make a difference.
  3. Once you have collected this footage, your group will need to choose and upload its best examples to YouTube as “unlisted” videos.  Your group will also need to decide how to best present those examples: will you keep each shot separate and upload it as an individual film clip?  Or will you put together a kind of “demo reel” that compiles all of your examples in one video?
Step 3: Group Presenting & Future Planning (tap/click to view)

Group Activity (In-class, Week 3)

  1. Group members will present their example shots to the class and share their expertise on various aspects of each type of shot.
  2. After the presentations are done, groups will have the remaining time to collaborate on Filmmaking Project 1,

Please Note: Departmental camcorders and  tripods are available for students/groups who prefer to not use their smartphones for filmmaking.
